Google Preparing To Launch Wireless Carrier

(Photo : Reuters) Google is preparing an MVNO in the U.S., to facilitate the growing Google Fiber customer-base.

Google is serious about launching its own wireless service, according to The Information.

The wireless service will be an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) and will use T-Mobile and Sprint's service, similar to other MVNO operations like Tracfone and Simple Mobile.

Utilizing the power of the third and fourth largest carrier should give Google an easy launch path, rather than building its own network, which could take over a decade to be fully nationwide.

It is part of a growing effort by Google to provide everyone with reliable internet, but this should be centered in regions with Google Fiber, allowing Google to offer TV, broadband and mobile all in one package.

Google is working on different price plans for customers, which could undercut Sprint and T-Mobile, the two carriers competing against Verizon Wireless and AT&T on price.

It is questionable why Google did not decide to partner with Verizon on the network, considering it just signed a 10-year patent agreement, it would seem the two companies are friendly with one another.

Another topic up for debate is the potential acquisition of T-Mobile. Deutsche Telekom recently said it was still up for sale, and having its own network would allow Google much more flexibility when it comes to growth, especially since it has over $75 billion in the bank to spend on spectrum wars.

The wireless network is only one of Google's potential ways to get internet to everyone, Google is also working on Project Loon; a balloon satellite system for offering broad internet access; alongside a $1 billion investment in SpaceX which is working on its own satellite program.

In the second or third iteration of Loon, Google might be able to offer service fast enough to beat current mobile speeds, and this would remove the need to partner with T-Mobile and Sprint—this is a considerable few years away however.
