(Photo : Reuters) Google spent more on lobbying in Washington than Comcast in 2014, according to a corporate spending watchdog.

Google invested and entered a lot of markets in 2014 - alongside holding market dominance in search, email, video and advertising - making it a good target for legislators and Senators.

That might be the reason Google's budget for lobbying in the U.S. was higher than Comcast's in 2014, according to nonprofit Consumer Watchdog that monitors lobbying in Washington.

The search giant spent $16.83 million on lobbying in 2014, just a tiny bit more than the $16.8 million Comcast spent on lobbying to make sure its Time Warner Cable deal went smoothly, and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did not go through with new net neutrality laws.

Google has a voice in the net neutrality debate, pushing for Title II reclassification for its own sake as a search giant, and to gain more foothold for Google Fiber.

It is not the only reason Google would invest in lobbying efforts, the Mountain View based company is also pushing self-driving cars, flying balloon satellites, augmented reality glasses and various acquisitions, which will be overviewed in Congress.

Calico and 23andMe are other projects Google wants the U.S. government to not look over, since it might override some of the FDA's rules. 23andMe has already been hit by the FDA due to its medical checker, using DNA scans.

Google's lobbying numbers are much higher than Microsoft or Facebook, reportedly at $8.33 million and $9.34 million, respectively. Google was the largest of 15 tech companies overviewed by the watchdog, showing its deep pockets for lobbying.
