While the Jennifer Lawrence-starrer The Hunger Games: Mockingjay--Part 1 is the highest-grossing movie in America, the film, though did not stand a chance with Transformer: Age of Extinction, which enjoyed a whopping US$1.084 billion in worldwide ticket sales, making it 2014's most successful film.

The fourth installment of the live-action Transformers franchise made US$245 million in the North American box-office, while the remainder of its billion-dollar revenue was earned from its international release.

Into the second spot is The Hobbit: The battle of the Five Armies, which enjoyed US$806.5 million dollars in international ticket sales. It is the third and final installment of The Hobbit franchise, also the final middle earth adaptation of Tolkien's classics.

Guardians of the Galaxy, meanwhile, placed on the third spot, after earning US$772.8 million internationally. The Marvel-produced superhero film saw a stellar cast that gave life to the characters from the comic book series of the same name.

The dark fantasy film, Maleficent, earned the fourth spot after grossing US$757.8 million. Maleficent is the live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, which tells story based on the viewpoint of the antagonist, Maleficent.

Landing on the fifth spot is X-Men: Days of Future Past, with US$748.1 million. It is the it is the seventh installment of the X-Men film series.

Here are the other films that made into the sixth through the tenth spot of highest grossing films for 2014. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $714.1 million; The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - US$711.9 million; The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - US$709.0 million; Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - US$708.8 million; and, Interstellar - US$663.3 million.
