Apple Eats Into Samsung's Market Share In South Korea

Samsung is losing out in its home country of South Korea to Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Samsung has held a dominant presence in South Korea in all electronic markets, competing heavily with LG in the home-country in everything from wearables to washing machines.

The mobile market might be slipping away from Samsung however, due to an influx of iPhone attention in late 2014. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus appear to have interested the South Korean community, where large phablet devices are popular.

Samsung had slipped from 60 percent in Oct. 2014 to 46 percent in Nov. 2014, while Apple managed an overwhelming increase from 13 to 33 percent in the same period.

This pushed Apple ahead of second place LG in the mobile race, placing LG third with 13 percent. Pantech came fourth with 5 percent of the market.

Apple has never been able to win over South Korean customers until now, always falling behind Samsung in annual sales. South Korea is not the only country won over by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and even India Apple is seeing growth.

Even with the two new sizes, Apple is reportedly pondering the re-launch of a 4-inch iPhone for 2015, to go alongside the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Reports say the smartphone will be called the iPhone 6S Mini, to fit with Apple's iPad brand names.

Stats on the iPhone 6 Plus vs Galaxy Note 4 sales have not been announced, but it would be a surprise if Samsung managed to beat Apple's phablet device. The iPhone 6 is still the most popular of the two devices, reportedly selling over 40 million units alone.

Apple will hope the same confidence in its products moves to the Apple Watch, its first wearable coming in spring 2015.
