Three American friends were taken to a Mexican hospital after reportedly becoming possessed by evil spirits while playing with an Ouija board.

Alexandra Huerta, 22, was playing the game with her brother Sergio, 23, and 18-year-old cousin Fernando Cuevas at a house in the village of San Juan Tlacotenco in south-west Mexico, when she apparently started 'growling' and thrashing around, reports state.

Sergio and Fernando also started showing signs of 'possession' such as feelings of blindness, deafness, and hallucinations.

Huerta's parents called a local Catholic priest to the house to deal with the supposed 'possessions', but the priest refused to perform an exorcism as none of the three are regular churchgoers.  

It was then that the parents decided to call in paramedics to restrain the three.

Alexandra had to be administered anti-stress medication and forcibly strapped to a stretcher in order to prevent her from hurting herself.

Paramedics also administered anti-stress medication, painkillers, and eye drops to Fernando and Sergio after which they showed visible signs of improvement.

The director of public safety in the nearby town of Tepoztlan stated that: "The medical rescue of these three young people was very complicated.They had involuntary movements and it was difficult to transfer them to the nearest hospital because they were so erratic."

The director also verified that the three Americans described feelings of "numbness, double vision, blindness, deafness, hallucinations, muscle spasm and difficulty swallowing."

The Ouija board, otherwise known as a 'sprit board' or 'talking board', was invented in 1890 by businessman Elijah Bond. The game is a flat board marked with letters of the alphabet as well as the numbers 0-9, the words 'yes', 'no', 'hello', 'goodbye', and various other symbols.

When using the board, players ask the spirits a question then employ an upturned glass or a small piece of wood through which the spirit's message can be spelled out on the board.

Supposedly, the glass or the wood are supposed to move around on their own as spirits make contact through the game. Several religions, including Christian and Catholic, have warned against Ouija boards claiming that it is a gateway for demonic spirits.
