Feminist Apparel Company Comes Under Fire from Feminists

A Philadelphia-based clothing company which seeks to promote feminism through t-shirts with pro-feminist slogans, has been on the receiving end of some serious internet backlash recently due to how the company's owner, Alan Martofel, chooses to run his business.

Feminist Apparel is, according to their website, the first solely feminist online clothing shop and has received a lot of attention in recent years due to their anti-rape stance and pro-feminist apparel.

Twenty percent of all the company's proceeds also go to "helping fund local, women-empowering non-profit organizations," further causing Feminist Apparel to rise to the top as one of 'the' clothing brands to support.

However, the feminist clothing line is at the center of a Twitter storm these days after potential buyers recognized some of the t-shirt slogans from other sites such as Etsy and Tumblr.

"I was contacted by Feminist Apparel back in February to act as a brand ambassador. I was elated to see Etsy designer and high school friend Mandy Caruso's original design on their site. Unfortunately, when I asked how they knew of Mandy, they had no clue who she was. This was the first red flag," Kat Lazo revealed to Buzzfeed.

Since then, several other individuals have come forward saying that they recognize the slogans Feminist Apparel is using, and profiting from, as taken from other sites and designers.

But that's not the only issue feminists have with the company. Some find it disturbing that Feminist Apparel is owned by a white male and that the only way women have any say in what happens in the company is by holding a board position - and even then, Martofel would still have executive power, making some decisions purely his own.

Martofel stepped up to defend himself and his company saying:

"I didn't know about feminism until 18 months ago and when I got through the common misconceptions that are put out there, I became an impassioned ally and I wanted to create something that could create a dent in the issues we listed in the previous email, as opposed to a one-time donation to the Feminist Majority or whatnot."

The Feminist Apparel owner also stated that he is working hard to make changes to the company's business model, but feels that criticism is inevitable.
