Dozens were injured after a floor collapsed under a large group of people in a suburban Houston home on Thursday.

As many as 125 people had gathered for a religious event in the residential area of Katy, Texas, when the floor gave way beneath them. Reportedly, the group was in an apartment above a detached garage.

Authorities have confirmed that around 36 people were taken to the hospital for treatment, although most suffered only minor injuries. Three people were said to have suffered "urgent" but not critical damage.

The collapse happened at around 1 p.m. and dozens of ambulances arrived on the scene shortly after. A few people were trapped inside the wreckage but emergency crews were able to safely pull the victims free.

A makeshift triage area was set up in the yards of nearby homes and from their firefighters and emergency crews treated individuals being carried from the collapsed home. Around three dozen of those were then sent to the hospital for further treatment.

Leticia Sahagun-Rubio, who lives across the street, was inside her home when she reportedly heard a commotion outside. Rubio said she looked at her neighbor's home and "saw streams of people were just coming out."

When she approached those exiting the house, the majority were unable to speak English so she provided them with water until emergency crews arrived on the scene.

Officials specified that there was no one in the garage below at the time of the incident.

It's not clear what sort of event was going on in the house at the time, although eyewitnesses did see around 100 to 150 people entering the home dressed in white linen pants and shirts as well as colorful saris.

A fire department official stated that building inspectors don't regulate the number of people together in these types of residential structures.
