A British woman has miraculously given birth to a healthy baby boy despite being paralyzed by a stroke a week before her delivery.

Twenty-nine year-old Kate Weaver, a haematology nurse at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, narrates how she suffered cramps while shopping with her 36-year-old husband Tim and was unable to pull herself up again after sitting down to rest.

Being a nurse, she immediately recognized the signs of a stroke and told her husband to get her to a hospital before losing her ability to speak and move.

Deciding to save Kate's life in spite of the risk the process poses to her unborn child, the Weaver family decided to go on with her thrombolysis - a process used to break down stroke-causing blood clots which have never been performed on a pregnant woman.

Although her speech returned within four hours after her stroke, she remained partially paralyzed and had almost no movement on her left side when she left the hospital.

"I can't describe it how scary having a stroke and knowing that I was about to give birth was - I didn't think I was going to make it," she said.

Three days after, she gave birth to a healthy 6 lb. 11 oz. baby boy she later named Toby.

"I thought we would both die so when I heard Toby cry, the release of knowing he was alive was incredible," she added.

Stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or blocked for any reason - in Kate's case, a blood clot.

In a study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, it has been proven that pregnant women aged 25 to 34 have a higher risk of having stroke. High blood pressure is seen as a major factor why women at these ages are at risk of having a stroke.
