Google's New Search Deal with Twitter Could Spark Content Usage Uprising

Google recently entered a deal with Twitter to integrate tweets into search results. For the first time, Google also offered a monetary agreement for displaying the tweets in the form of data-licensing revenue.

Considering Google's previous apprehension at providing revenue to search results, it seems odd it's now getting into bed with Twitter and providing up to US$41 million in revenue for the tweets.

Google does gain some more knowledge on the user profile for advertising, but other than that the tweets are no different from Facebook links, YouTube videos or Tumblr blogs -- all of which aren't monetized on Google Search.

This is even more worrisome for Google if governments and organizations cotton on with the recent ban on Google News in Spain following a new news tax, and a previous ban in Germany for the same headline tax.

Even though Google News is entirely different from Google Search, this new agreement might bring news organizations to think they deserve the same revenue share of search results, something Google isn't willing to offer.

It's surprising Google is providing payment for the tweets on search results, but shows the dominance of tweets as a news source in the modern age. This could change online journalism if news orgs think their tweets will receive higher search results than their article on a subject.

This payment has not been disclosed or confirmed by either party. Until it has, news orgs might think twice about fighting Google over search results, considering the damage to them if Google removes an organization from the most popular search engine.
