Facebook Users In India Get Internet for Free

Facebook is pushing Internet.org into India, partnering with Reliance Communications to bring a selection of internet services to six states: Tamil Nadu, Mahararashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala and Telangana for free.

The free part is the real kicker since hundreds of millions potential Indian mobile and web users cannot afford even the basic data plans. For most, this will be their first venture onto the web.

Facebook is preloading its own social network and other highly viewed services across the world that will be available in seven different languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati and Marathi.

Some have protested Internet.org's small sample size is against net neutrality because it doesn't treat all internet services equally and more importantly promotes its own service above others.

Facebook claims it's on a venture to give the whole world internet. It started in Kenya and Zambia, and earlier this month Colombia was added into the fray. Critics claim this is just a way for Facebook to earn more advertising dollars.

Google is apparently employing similar tactics with its own Fiber and wireless service coming to the U.S. in 2015. Already Fiber is available in three cities but Google plans more expansion into four cities in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.

The difference with Google Fiber is the fiber optic broadband service doesn't promote its own services and instead gives users the ability to view any website.
