The Force be with them

NASA has just revealed the official poster for Expedition 45 set to travel to the International Space Station in September.

The poster shows the astronauts clad in Jedi inspired garb, each armed with a lightsaber and looking ready for a real life Star Wars mission.

The crew of six astronauts and cosmonauts traded their blue NASA space flight uniforms for brown robes during the photo shoot.

This poster aptly called, "International Space Station Expedition XLV: The Science Continues", features the station's first one-year mission crew, Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko, along with NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Volkov and Oleg Kononenko and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kimiya Yui.

The poster also reveals the crew's official mission patch that looks similar to an Imperial Star Destroyer. There's also a Russian Soyuz rocket with four solar panels appearing on the side of the poster that looks like a Rebel X-wing fighter. The ISS is above the poster, hovering over the jedis.

The overall theme of the poster and the layout was apparently Lindgren's idea. Lindgren is making his first journey into space with this mission.

The poster was composed with the help of NASA photographers and graphic artists from the Johnson Space Center, Houston where they also added digital lightsabers.

This poster is also part of a NASA crew poster series depicting movies such as Tron and Star Trek. The space station's Expedition 42 crew recreated the movie poster for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

This Expedition 45 poster is apparently not the first time NASA used Star Wars as a theme for a crew press release. In 2007, NASA sent a prop lightsaber from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi on the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-120 mission to the ISS.

Expedition 45 will end its mission in early November, one month before the release of the newest Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
