More than 400 workers made it out of a South Africa gold mine alive after they were trapped due to fire, the mining company announced on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, Pam McLoed , said all 486 personnel were accounted for and had not shown any sign of injuries.

McLoed added all the mine staff had been brought to safety.

They were working more than two kilometers underground when a fire broke out on Sunday morning, which cut their way to the surface.

They were involved in the operations of the Kusasalethu mine of Harmony Gold near Carletonville, which lies southwest of Johannesburg.

The workers had medical check-ups and provided with counseling to make sure whether they were not hurt by smoke inhalation or severely dehydrated after the incident, the company said.

Authorities said the fire could have started while maintenance work was being performed on a large air cooler located on the 75th level of the Kusasalethu mine.

The company sent emergency responders with special training to rescue the trapped personnel.

The Kusasalethu mine have had several accidents in the past. Last year, three people died due to a mishap at the mine.

In 2012 and 2013, four people were killed and two people died respectively in separate accidents, according to the company.
