Boston Red Sox Acquires Yoan Moncada In US$63M Deal

The Boston Red Sox paid US$63 million to sign 19-year old Cuban prospect Yoan Moncada into the team.

If US$63 million seems like a lot for a young player, rest assured that not everything is going to Moncada. Only half of what was paid will make its way into Moncada's pockets, while the other half is reserved for paying the penalties the Red Sox sustained for blowing past their international onus pool limit.

At 19, Moncada is a year away from the Majors. However, he is considered a top talent in the game. Ben Badler of Baseball America states that he is currently the best player in the Red Sox's farm system.

Moncada is a switch hitter and is also capable of playing multiple positions infield. In addition, he has the physical capacity to move to the outfield if the Red Sox need him to do so. He is an all-around player with the physical capabilities to back it up.

Apart from Moncada, the Red Sox also added outfielder Rusney Castillo in August. Like Moncada, he is also a high profile Cuban player.

In November, they signed Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, while their line-ups are also strengthened by the return of stars such as Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz.

The Red Sox are coming in hard for the 2015 season and are looking to establish themselves as a team out for the championship.

However, the Red Sox's acquisition of Moncada does more than just strengthen the line-up. Mike Axisa of CBSSports.com says that the move also allows the team to part with prospects to acquire Cole Hamels.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr., has wanted to move Hamels for prospects, but has not seen a package of players worth for him yet.

Moncada tips the scale though, as the Red Sox now has a number of players that are ready for the big league.
