HBO in Talks With Apple, Google for $15 Per Month Streaming Service

HBO is looking for a partnership between Google and Apple for its streaming service.

HBO is currently working out distribution deals with at least six companies regarding its 'HBO Now' subscription service, the first to offer shows like "Game of Thrones", "True Detective" and "Girls" on an internet-only plan.

The service will be web-only for the initial launch. That means an iPad and Android app are out of the question for 2015. This might be due to subscription-based services on mobile having to give a cut to Apple and Google, which is probably the main reason HBO is in discussions with the two tech giants.

HBO is also looking to get another app on Apple TV alongside its HBO Go service.

Even though Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video and Hulu Plus all offer their subscription service for less than $10 per month, HBO Now will reportedly cost $15 per month or the same as its cable service.

Considering the cable programmer is a subsidiary of Time Warner Cable, it's highly unlikely HBO will sell for cheaper on the internet, potentially pushing cable customers to pull the cord.

HBO does realize the necessity of having an internet service without a cable subscription considering the 57 million active Netflix subscribers. It's not clear if HBO Now will be available only in the U.S. or throughout the world.

Game of Thrones is the obvious seller for HBO Now and is the most pirated TV show worldwide. The problem is if HBO only launches in the U.S., it still alienates a large part of its audience in Europe, Australia and even China where Game of Thrones and other shows are quite popular.

Netflix has stated before its goal is to become HBO before HBO becomes Netflix. Netflix has already shown aptitude at making great TV shows. Now it's time for HBO to strike with its own internet-only service.
