Android Lollipop Only Running on 3% of Devices

Android Lollipop isn't growing at a fast rate. After being available for nearly a year, it still only runs on three percent of devices.

Jelly Bean still holds 43 percent of the operating system share with KitKat just behind at 40 percent.

Even Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread hold more share than Lollipop, at seven percent and six percent, respectively. Google has revealed the next update to Chrome 42 will be the last coming to Ice Cream Sandwich. Afterwards it won't be supported.

There has been a steady push away from Ice Cream Sandwich but all too often low-end smartphones are running 4.2 or 4.3 out of the box instead of installing Android KitKat or Lollipop.

Android Lollipop is the largest redesign of the OS. This might put some users off upgrading but the performance advantages are numerous and worth the change in UI.

Some features are still in the pipeline, including encryption by default. Google said it would feature full mobile encryption but didn't include the fact its OEM partners would be allowed to switch off this encryption.

Even though Android adoption is still slow, more providers are looking to remove the heavy reskinning normally seen on OEM devices. Samsung, for example, has dropped a lot of bloatware and animations from its TouchWiz skin for Lollipop, vastly improving performance.

The launch of the Galaxy S6, HTC One M9 and LG G4 in the coming months should help the adoption rate of Lollipop, alongside Motorola, Xiaomi and Lenovo's new devices normally launched in the first-half of the year.
