Self-Driving Mercedes Benz Prototype is a 'Mobile Living Space'

The Mercedes Benz F 015 is the big vision of the future of the automotive industry, offering not only a self-driving car but a mobile home on wheels fit with everything a normal room would have.

It was first shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and features two rows of seats facing each other rather than the traditional forward-facing seats.

According to several reports, the Mercedes Benz F 015 has been spotted on the roads in San Francisco where several self-driving cars are being tested due to regulations allowing companies to test the cars.

The self-driving car is powered by a hybrid electric fuel cell with a range of 900 kilometers. Its battery has a range of around 200 kilometers. It's rather poor battery range compared to the current Tesla Motors Model S.

It's also rather uneasy for a self-driving car so forward thinking using a hybrid electric fuel cell. Hopefully, Mercedes will look into a full electric battery for the commercial edition, which is still five years away from being allowed on the roads.

"Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society," said  Zetsche, chairman of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz cars.

"The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space."

This comment by Zetsche seems to suggest Mercedes Benz will work towards adding beds and other features on a normal living space to the car. There was another autonomous vehicle with a bed inside, allowing drivers to rest while on the road.

It's still murky waters whether things like beds and televisions will be allowed in a car since the current focus is on safety.
