The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved on Tuesday Palcohol or powdered alcohol. The product, invented by Mark Phillips, is expected to be a game changer in the industry because it makes bringing of heavy bottles of alcoholic beverages unnecessary.

The bureau actually gave the product approval in 2014 April but took it back over discrepancy on its fill level, which had already been addressed with the submission by Lipsmark of new labels, said bureau spokesman Tom Hogue.

It approved four varieties of Palcohol. The four use powder from distilled vodka or distilled Puerto Rican rum and come in cosmopolitan, mojito and Powderita, which is its version of Margarita, and lemon drop which is still not approved.

In 2014, Phillips explained the concept of Powderita to Time. He said then, "Imagine a regular margarita on a counter. Now imagine if you could snap your fingers and the margarita turns into powder. That's what Palcohol is ... without the magic."

It also makes it easier to consume alcohol even in places where the product is banned or regulated. This early, some state are already planning to ban Palcohol because of the difficulty in regulating its use, reports Metro.

According to NBC, Colorado legislators prepared advance laws to temporarily stop its sale in the state where recreational marijuana is legal. In seeking tighter regulation over Palcohol, lawmakers cite the possibility that it would be abused by minors, it could be snorted and it would be easy to sneak it in public events as well as to spike drinks.

Phillip targets a summer launch for Palcohol. The product would be made by Lipsmark. Each pouch is the equivalent of one shot of alcohol and is about 80 calories.
