"Andy has excelled in all aspects of television universe, both from behind and in front of the camera," said Bruce Rosenblum, chairman and CEO of the Television Academy.

Samberg rose to fame in the sketch show 'Saturday Night Live'and became a mainstay for seven consecutive seasons. He is also a member of the comedic boy band group called Lonely Island, who has collaborated with several artists such as T-Pain and Adam Levine.

Samberg bagged his first Emmy Award for outstanding music and original lyrics in 2007 for an SNL sketch collaboration with singer Justin Timberlake.

Samberg is now a mainstay in the TV show, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'.  He portrays Det. Jake Peralta, a role that earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Actor.

The Television Academy recently announced a new set of rules the previous month that pertained to the expansion of contenders in comedy and drama categories.  From the usual six nominees, it will be increased to seven nominees.

Comedy series will be further classified according to their time frame. Shows shorter than 30 minutes and shows that are beyond 30 minutes will be in two separate categories.

The mini-series was renamed as a 'limited series' and there were also several changes announced in the category of variety series.

The official nominations for the 2015 Emmy Primetime Awards will be announced on July 16.
