Stop the Robots: Anti-Robot Protest Held at SXSW

Will they destroy us?

A protest against robots and artificial intelligence was held during the South by Southwest (SXSW) culture and technology festival in Austin, Texas with protesters chanting "I say robot, you say no-bot"!

About two dozen protesters, many of them engineering students from the nearby University of Texas, were led by a computer engineer. They warned our over reliance on technology will lead to the early demise of humanity.

Signs reading "Stop the Robots" and "Humans are the future" were scattered among the anti-robot march as protesters made their statement and bystanders either stood amused or flabbergasted during the festival that's famous for film and music.

The organizer of the protest was 23 year-old Adam Mason who feels strongly about the implications of technology advances that can overrun any sort of human control in the near future. He said this issue is about morality in computing.

Apparently, Mason and his cohorts aren't the only ones that have acknowledged their fear by letting the world know about their stand about the rise of the machines.

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking has also repeatedly given warnings about the unprecedented consequences of AI. He proclaimed that if humans only think of highly intelligent machines as science fiction, this could be the worst mistake in human history.

Apart from Hawking, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has also told of his grave concerns about AI. He warns that major tech companies shouldn't underestimate these "digital superintelligences" with the false belief they can control AI.

Even if robotics and AI have been a boon to mankind, there are still "Luddites" or people that fear technology. Some suggest the Three Laws of Robotics developed by famous sci-fi writer and biochemist Isaac Asimov must be applied to keep the machines at bay.
