Android Auto Finally Available for Compatible Cars

(Photo : Reuters) Google has finally launched Android Auto for compatible cars.

Google's car dashboard system, Android Auto, is coming to compatible cars next week, nine months after it was first announced at Google I/O 2014.

The Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX and AVH-4100NEX will support Android Auto but car owner needs to have a compatible smartphone running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Google will use a new companion app to connect the smartphone to the car dashboard, allowing notifications and services to be pushed onto the car.

Some of the car dashboards will feature touch-screen and voice recognition services but cheaper ones will not. Google is trying to make Android Auto available for everyone but has to win over automotive companies to get support.

In the UK, Android Auto is compatible with AVIC-F77DAB, AVIC-F70DAB, AVH-X8700BT. In Australia, AVIC-F70DAB and AVH-X8750BT are the two compatible dashboards.

Google is competing against Apple's CarPlay service and both are trying to take over the dashboard and offer a variety of services. It removes the rather clunky homemade car dashboard that some providers have started using to integrate internet connectivity.

It might not seem like a lot of compatibility but Google is confident in 2015 and 2016 more providers will come on board. Apple recently announced 40 providers were making models with CarPlay support. We would expect similar stats for Android Auto.

Google I/O is coming this June, which is also when Android Auto is bound to get its first update.
