Washington Will Allow Sale of Marijuana Cookies, but no Lollipops or Candy

Marijuana shops in Washington state are apparently allowed to sell cookies with marijuana in them, but not lollipops or other candy as these products are more likely to appeal to children.

On July 8, Washington became only the second U.S. state to allow recreational sales of the drug to adults. Retail stores carrying marijuana have been subjected to heavy regulations and tax systems.

According to state guidelines, stores can sell brownies, cookies, and other specifically approved baked goods, but not sweets, jelly beans, or other food items children might be drawn to.

The Liquor Control Board will also enforce rules regarding proper packaging of baked goods. All items must feature an in-depth list of each ingredient in the product as well as the number of doses.

Recreational stores in the state are also only allowed to sell marijuana products which have been grown and processed locally in Washington.

Due to the heavy restrictions, not all of the roughly two dozen stores which have opened since marijuana was legalized in Washington are operational. Some remain closed due to issues obtaining the drug.

Colorado, which legalized marijuana just over a year ago, has seen its fair share of issues tied to the sale of the drugs.

In the months following legalization of marijuana in Colorado, hospital employees reported an increase in sick children and adults believed to have consumed potent doses of edible marijuana.

One man, after buying a package of marijuana-laced candy, became delusional and shot and killed his wife.

Colorado also allowed for the sale of marijuana in candy which raised serious concerns about the brightly packaged sweets finding their way into children's hands.

Washington seems to be trying to learn from these mishaps by restricting how, and what type of marijuana are sold in stores across the state, creating a safer environment for the US' second bout of legal marijuana sales.
