Uber Taxis Outnumber Yellow Cabs in New York

(Photo : Reuters) There are more Uber taxis in New York than the traditional yellow taxi.

Uber has a dominant hold of the U.S. taxi market. Uber announced revenues five times that of the entire taxi industry in San Francisco and now, reports say Uber taxis outnumber yellow cabs in New York.

Since Uber doesn't pay the same amount back to the state, Uber is most likely making more revenue than the entire taxi industry in New York, as well.

Uber commands over 14,000 black cabs and luxury vehicles in New York City compared to 13,500 registered to the Taxi and Limousine Commission. Since New York is the city of yellow taxis, it's hard to imagine Uber has more cars on the road.

The company has invested a huge amount of resources into markets like New York and San Francisco where the taxi market is the most vibrant. Uber has been known to offer regular taxi drivers a new job during a ride, offering them free iPhones and pay rises.

Uber also has alarge interest in places like London and Paris in Europe, and is trying to get into the Asian market with mixed success. In South Korea, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is wanted as a criminal for disobeying the transport law in that country, an extremely weird case.

It can definitely be said Uber is far from a "startup" since it's beaten the entire taxi industry in most of the important parts of the world. With a valuation of over $40 billion, Uber beats quite a few companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as well.

Uber still hasn't made any public announcements on an IPO, even though rumors have been floating about for a 2015 public launch. It held two funding rounds in 2014, both for $1.2 billion, alongside an investment from Chinese search engine Baidu for $1 billion.
