Astrophysicist and scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson slammed the state of Florida during a series of appearances for banning the use of the words "climate change" and "global warming".

According to local reports, deGrasse Tyson was disappointed and rather concerned the U.S. state most susceptible to the effects of climate change -- Florida-- would embrace a rather foolhardy policy.

This year, Republican Governor Rick Scott, a leading climate denier, banned the terms "climate change" and "global warming" in official correspondence and documents. He even suspended an official of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for mentioning the terms during a meeting.

During his appearance on Tuesday at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota, deGrasse Tyson considered climate change an "emergent scientific truth" that language bans can never erase.

DeGrasse Tyson also slammed how politics has been tampering with science, saying he thought that as a nation, Americans are supposed to be better than this.

In another press conference in Sarasota, he said politicians are involved in a mindless debate about who's to blame for climate change. Instead of denying climate change, the local government should just face the scientific facts and decide immediate steps to combat climate change.

As regards the Republicans' and Scott's tenacious insistence climate change is a myth, deGrasse Tyson replied it's like repealing gravity because you gained 10 pounds last week.

He said politicians are not ultimately to blame, however, since we vote politicians into office. He blamed the electorate, instead.

The famous astrophysicist also pointed out the lackluster role of the U.S. in space exploration in light of the European Space Agency landing a probe on a comet last year and the discovery of the "God Particle" by the Europeans.

He did praise recent space exploration contributions of NASA such as the New Horizons probe that reached Pluto this month. He believes the U.S. is still in the game but "not just the same kind of intensity we had in the 60s".
