Samsung Working on Devices with Iris Recognition

(Photo : Reuters) Samsung reportedly paid fake fans to attend a Chinese event.

Samsung is working with Stanford Research Institute, the same team that worked on Apple's Siri, to develop Iris scanning technology for a range of smartphones and tablets.

The new biometric option is apparently 1,000 times more accurate than published fingerprint data, meaning even more security over transactions and unlocks.

Named Iris on the Move, the tech has been in development at SRI for a few years. Samsung has been given exclusive licensing to the technology so this should be a breakthrough in eye-scanning.

There were reports the Galaxy S6 would feature retina scanning but this didn't come to pass. Instead, Samsung will add the scanner onto a custom version of the Galaxy Tab 8.4 for business customers.

The Galaxy S6 does already have a fingerprint sensor on board and adding iris scanning might have been overkill. It does raise the question, "Does Samsung feel like iris scanning isn't a viable feature for consumers"?

We'll find out in the next few months as Samsung broadens its new range of smartphones for 2015. Reports say Samsung will drop 30 percent of its smartphone range to provide more clarity on its products, which might mean the end of oddball products like the Galaxy S5 Active and Zoom.

The iris scanning will only be available in select markets. If it shows promise, it will most likely arrive on new devices, although the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge won't get it without a hardware refresh.
