One HK Resident Onboard Flight MH17, Government Confirms

The Hong Kong Immigration Department has confirmed that at least one Hong Kong resident was onboard Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 that was shot down over Ukraine.

"After preliminary verification of the passenger lists the Immigration Department found that one Hong Kong resident and his or her relative who held an overseas passport took the flight involved in the accident. We have immediately contacted their relatives... and will offer any possible assistance," a department official said in a statement on Friday.

The department added that it is continues to verify any other local residents who were possibly on board the crashed plane.

Dutch media reported the Hong Kong passenger, Fan Shun-po in his 60's together with his Malaysian wife, Jenny Loh, aged 54 was traveling to Kuala Lumpur for a holiday.

They owned Asian Glories, a Chinese restaurant and an Asian eatery, Dim Daily and left these to their only son, Kevin Fan, in Roterdam, Netherlands.

A statement released by Civil Aviation Department on Friday said that airlines that are based in Hong Kong do not t have routes that pass through Ukranian airspace and MH17 did not pass through Hong Kong flight information region.

Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong airline, also stated that none of its flights had passed over Eastern Ukraine and added that its flights would avoid the said routes.

The identities of the 298 people that was said to be on the crashed plane hat not been released by the Malaysian Airlines yet.

However, the airline provided the known nationalities of the passengers - 189 were Dutch, 27 Australians, 44 were Malaysians,12 were from Indonesia and nine from the United Kingdom, four from Germany and Belgium, three were from the Philippines and one was Canadian.

The airline's previous count did not mention one Hong Kong passenger.
