Amazon is preparing its largest acquisition to date but instead of video streaming services, the e-commerce company is looking into luxury women's fashion with Net-A-Porter.

First reported by Women's Wear Daily, the acquisition could cost up to $2 billion although Forbes expects it to be a lower figure. It would still be higher than the $970 million Amazon forked over for Twitch.TV, the streaming service it acquired in 2014.

The issue for Amazon is it has a reputation for cheap deals and promotions, two things not usually associated with high-end fashion. Net-A-Porter, on the other hand, is perfectly capable of flogging a dress of upwards of $10,000.

Amazon acquired ShopBop in 2006, another women's fashion store, but failed to do anything with the talent or website. This time, Amazon needs to make sure it allows Net-A-Porter to grow by itself instead of stepping in and changing the goals.

Net-A-Porter managed $835 million sales in 2014, which could easily hit $1 billion by 2015. The operating loss at $30 million is still a slight worry, but considering Amazon had a $600 million operating loss in Q3 and Q4 2014, we doubt it will make much difference.

Amazon wants to be in all parts of e-commerce but its budget-end look has forced CEO Jeff Bezos to look elsewhere for high-end luxury, clearly not confident Amazon's brand will be able to interest luxury buyers.
