Microsoft Acquires Powerpoint Conversion Startup LiveLoop

(Photo : Reuters) Microsoft has surpassed analyst expectations with strong cloud and services performance.

Microsoft has been on an acquisition spree over the past few months, picking up new talent and products to push Office and other products into a new mobile and web age.

LiveLoop is the newest acquisition, a program that converts PowerPoint presentations to URL format. It allows everyone to check out the URL without having PowerPoint downloaded on the machine or some other third-party supported presentation service.

The program will close on April 24. All presentations stored on the system will be wiped as the team transitions over to Redmond. Most Microsoft acquisitions remove all traces of the acquired team's work.

Using the technology LiveLoop offers, Microsoft might make it easier to access PowerPoint on the web in the near future. There is already a PowerPoint client available on the web but it isn't exactly groundbreaking when it comes to usability.

Microsoft didn't disclose the amount it paid for LiveLoop. It follows the acquisition of calendar application Sunrise for $100 million and email client Accompli for $200 million.

Under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has embraced the culture of low-cost acquisitions for talent or a feature instead of large scale acquisitions like Skype and Nokia under CEO Steve Ballmer.

That said, Microsoft did acquire Minecraft for $2.5 billion, but that was more to do with the Xbox Division. This is the same buying mentality Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Larry Page have shown over the past few years.
