Boston Red Sox bested the Washington Nationals last Sunday (9-4) with the debut of pitcher Rick Porcello and the fantastic feats of Mookie Betts.

Porcello, now 1-1, made his debut in Fenway Park this Sunday against the Nationals. His debut came only one week after he signed a contract worth US $82.5 million. The contract lasts for four years.

In the game, Porcello allowed only four hits in eight innings of play. Two of those four hits were home runs by Ryan Zimmerman and Danny Espinosa.

More than the first game of Porcello though, the story for the game against the Nationals was what Betts had accomplished in the game.

Throughout the game, Betts was able to take away a two-run homerun with a leaping catch, stealing two bases on the same pitch, and producing a home run with bases loaded.

This was made even more extraordinary when Betts accomplished all of these in the first two innings alone.

The young Boston leadoff hitter and center hitter thrilled the crowd and energized his teammates with his play. He started off the Sox towards the 9-4 win against the Nationals.

The 22-year old made his debut last June and hit .291 in 52 games.

When asked about his numerous highlights, Betts said he was most impressed with the steals. After walking in the first, he stole second and continued to third when he saw it uncovered.

He attributes what he has done to an "energy thing," as he gave out energy to teammates and the crowd, who in turn gave it back to him.

Zimmerman's start to the game was a wild one made evident by his ceremonial opening pitch bouncing on the dirt.

Zimmerman said that he really did not have a feel for the ball all game long and did not know where it was going to go.

The Red Sox improve to 18-5 in 23 games.
