Facebook News Feed Change Lets You See More Friend Updates

Facebook is making a big change to the way content is organized on the News Feed, adding more emphasis on friend's status updates instead of pages and friends of friends.

The update is the first "human" push by Facebook away from types of content outside the social circle. It allows users to feel like they're reading more status updates from people they actually want to hear from.

"We've learned that people are worried about missing important updates from the friends they care about. For people with many connections this is particularly important, as there is a lot of content for them to see each day", said Max Eulenstein, Product Manager and Lauren Scissors, User Experience Researcher.

"The second update tries to ensure that content posted directly by the friends you care about, such as photos, videos, status updates or links, will be higher up in News Feed so you are less likely to miss it".

With the amount of content on Facebook, including videos and potentially news articles in the future, it's hard to cram all of that good stuff in with regular updates from friends. Facebook will also be downsizing the amount of content on the News Feed, meaning endless scrolling may become less on an issue.

Facebook is also making sure friends of friends content is further down on the News Feed, like friends commenting or liking another person's status.

"Lastly, many people have told us they don't enjoy seeing stories about their friends liking or commenting on a post. This update will make these stories appear lower down in News Feed or not at all, so you are more likely to see the stuff you care about directly from friends and the pages you have liked."

This update may hurt some pages that get most views from the News Feed although if users like content from the page, it shouldn't hurt the page.

Facebook is trying to make sure its social network is just right for everyday users, while also bringing in all types of different content. Videos have been a massive part of the growth on mobile with millions of people watching the auto-play videos posted over three billion times on Facebook over the last year.
