Apple Watch Not Built for Long Term Use

(Photo : iFixit) iFixit has shown some of the issues with the Apple Watch long term.

The Apple Watch has been available for under 24 hours, but already the iFixit team have torn the device apart to inspect every element of Apple's carefully manufactured machine on a wrist.

The outcome is as expected. The team found Apple's replaceability poor and claimed the low-end specs won't work within a few years, making the "timeless" piece of technology put on a two to three year timeline.

Upgrades look near to impossible given the design of the internals and the lack of space for any such replacements. That means even if Apple wanted to offer servicing for owners of original Apple Watch units, it will most likely be for a new model instead of replacing parts of the old model.

This lack of upgradability makes the Apple Watch a much more questionable purchase, especially the Apple Watch Edition that may be irrelevant by next year if Apple launches the second generation.

Given that companies like Rolex, TAG Heuer and other watchmakers launch once in a lifetime models of regular watches, sell them for large amounts and allow repair for years, Apple is in a tough position to compete.

That said, the Apple Watch Edition sales accounted for one percent of all Apple Watch sales over the past two weeks. Doesn't sound like much, but given the price-tag one percent is a huge number when there have already been two million sales. To put it into context, that's 20,000 Apple Watch Edition sales, equaling $20 million in revenue.

We expect Apple will offer some premium service for the Apple Watch Edition and Apple's own insurance is available for around $1,000 for the Watch Edition for those that actually want a repair in three years.

Apple's early sales are extremely positive for the future of smartwatches on a whole even if the early dominance of the Apple Watch will put-off others from releasing their own in fear Apple's dominance will make them irrelevant.

The numbers being put forward by Apple suggest it wants at least 20 million sales by the end of the year. With two million already on limited stock, we expect they will hit that number quite easily -- unless the Watch sees lackluster performance in the coming months.
