James Bond Doesn't Want a Sony Phone, Even with a $5 Million Incentive

It looks like James Bond's love for Sony is starting to wear thin with Eon Productions currently looking for a higher package deal and "the best" smartphone on the market.

Both are unlikely to come from Sony.

In a back and forth with Sony executives, Andrew Gumpert, Columbia Pictures president of worldwide business affairs, said:

"BEYOND the $ factor, there is, as you may know, a CREATIVE factor whereby Mendes and Daniel don't like the Sony phone for the film (the thinking, subjectively/objectively is that James Bond only uses the "best," and in their minds, the Sony phone is not the "best")."

The emails were found through the WikiLeaks upload of the Sony Pictures leak. Thousands of emails were released and North Korea still stands accused of the attack despite overwhelming evidence against a North Korean involvement from security experts.

Bond already had a $5 million contract to show off the Xperia Z4, alongside $1 million for Bond's tech assistant Q and $18 million for product placement in the upcoming film, Spectre.

Who is the new suitor for Bond's weapon of mass communication? It looks like Samsung is in the running, with an $8 million bid for Bond and $50 million bid for the product placement rights.

We can't see anyone fighting Samsung when it comes to money although LG and HTC could give it a shot. Apple would undoubtedly be the crème de la crème but it's unlikely Apple would pay for advertising inside a Bond movie.

For decades, James Bond movies have been prime real estate for gadgets for men. Bond's beer will be Belvedere Vodka for the first time ever in what the vodka owner calls its largest advertising campaign ever.

Bond will be riding the classic Aston Martin, clearly Tesla Motors haven't called to try and replace the spot. Other product placement items like his suit, gun and potentially even his watch could all be products, in an attempt to indirectly advertise the product by making it seem like Bond is a fan.

Some have called out Eon Productions for its overzealous partnerships with brands to keep the income flowing in, especially since James Bond movies tend to make much more than it cost to develop the movie.

But Bond's brand appeal seems to be even larger than most celebrities and actors -- making it a lucrative opportunity for both parties.
