NASA's Probe Captures Entire Plutonic System; Pluto's Five Moons Chron, Hydra, Nix, Kerberos and Styx Captured in Detail

Pluto has long been a mystery to astronomers; however, the New Horizons probe launched by NASA has finally succeeded in capturing the entire Plutonic system with the dwarf planet being revolved by its five characteristic moons. Though Charon, Hydra and Nix were captured in the past, it is the first time that the dwarf planet's dwarf and faintest satellites namely Kerberos and Styx have been captured by the space agency.

This picture spells a word of elation for NASA for the probe has entered the end of its cycle and is all set to exit the Plutonic orbit by July 14 post, which it would keep flying farther from Earth and investigate other cold bodies.

John Spencer, the Program Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, spoke to Mashable and remarked that New Horizons is on the verge of making a huge scientific discovery. He added that if any new moons were observed in the Plutonic system, then that would be an altogether new sight for the world.

Previously, Pluto's all five moons were discovered using the Hubble Space Telescope. Reports by Gizmag suggest that Styx was discovered in 2012 whilst Kerberos was discovered in 2011 and is thought to be 6 to 20 mi in diameter.

The probe kicked off in February after a 9.5 year journey and fired its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and immediately sent the first images of Charon, the largest moon of the dwarf planet. Colored images of Pluto and images of Nix and Hydra were sent subsequently. This spelt consternation for the researchers who studied the first ever colored images of the dwarf planet.
