Philippine President Advises Manny Pacquiao to Retire, Says He Has Done Enough

In the midst of the country's celebration of his homecoming after an historic 12-round welterweight bout with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr., eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao received this piece of unsolicited advice from no less than Philippine President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III: "You have done enough. You shouldn't risk your health anymore," according to reports from the Inquirer.

Speaking in Filipino for a radio interview an hour before he met Pacquiao on May 14, President Aquino egged the Philippine's fighting congressman that it is time to hang his gloves and focus on his health and family.

Apparently, the President does not want a rematch, saying that "we're showing no gratitude to the man by prodding him to go for a rematch and risk his health once more."

Dubbed as the "Fight of the Century", Pacquiao lost a unanimous decision to the still unbeaten Mayweather on May 2 (May 3 in the Philippines) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Business New Asia reported that during an interview with Filipino journalists after the recently concluded 26th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Langkawi, Malaysia days before the match, the Chief Executive again expressed his old desire for Pacman to retire from the sport while he is still healthy.

"Of course, I go back to my perpetual message, continued fighting in the ring does not promote good health," Aquino said. He even mentioned boxing legend Muhammad Ali's ongoing fight with Parkinson's disease as something that Pacquiao would have to consider moving forward.

Aquino added that the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout should be his "crowning glory", stamping his name as perhaps the greatest Filipino boxer of all time.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao is cool and collected as always during his courtesy call with the President. He even expressed his plan to break from boxing for a while and allow his shoulder to heal completely, as reported by Andreo Calonzo of GMA News Online.

Pacquiao is a politician in the Philippines, serving as the representative of Sarangani province in the Congress. He and Aquino are actually from opposing political parties, with the President heading the governing Liberal Party while the boxer is affiliated with the opposing United Nationalist Alliance party.
