Leap Second: June to Be A Second Longer This Year [VIDEO]

This year, according to Tuesday's announcement by the IERS (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems), June will be a second longer. According to the IERS, the "leap second" will account for the discrepancy between the atomic clock and Earth's rotation.

KVUE news holds that the additional second shall be added as the clocks click midnight on June 30, universal time. The additional second shall be at exactly 7 p.m. CDT in Texas the same day. If you live in or near El Paso, the time will be 6 p.m MDT, according to reports by WQAD.

Introduction of leap seconds took place in 1972 and since its introduction, there have been twenty five instances of additional seconds being added, wherein the last came in June 30, 2012. IERS usually adds the leap seconds in December or June.

Websites and programs that are not equipped to handle these changes might have an issue, similar to websites such as LinkedIn and Yelp, which reportedly did in 2012. Although most people might notice the difference, experts are more than sure that the leap second will definitely make a huge difference. It is said that there is no doubt about that as some devices and products would need to be re-programmed to make them conform to the new time.

According to experts, most people will not even be aware of any difference in their days. A good number of people, if not all people, will not notice that their June 30 shall be a second longer.

It is only the experts that have the knowhow of identifying any slight difference on the major changes that will take place during that day in June. The time for the next leap second has not yet been established; however, one thing is for sure - experts are conducting research to establish when the next one will come.
