NBA Trade Rumors: Paul Pierce Still Undecided Whether To Retire Or Play For Wizards, Clippers

It feels like Paul Pierce had been playing in the NBA forever. He was a rookie Celtic with Antoine Walker when the New York Knicks almost completed a Cinderella finish in the 1999 postseason against eventual champions San Antonio Spurs. He was a witness to the Los Angeles Lakers' three-peat under legendary coach Phil Jackson. He was there all throughout the first decade of the new millennium when the Spurs virtually won the title every other year.

Eventually, Pierce won a championship of his own in 2008, with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen as the first modern Big Three. He bridged two generations of Celtic stars, playing alongside the likes of Kenny Anderson, Ron Mercer, and Tony Battie up to Rajon Rondo, Jared Sullinger, and Brandon Bass.

It has been 17 long years of basketball action. And the 10-time All-Star still can't decide whether to continue to play or to call it quits. For the man they call "The Truth", the old saying "the mind is willing, but the flesh is weak" is so true more than ever.

"I do feel like I can still play this game", Pierce said in a radio interview as reported by CBS Sports' Ananth Pandian. "I mean, I showed that this year, that I still have something left in the tank. But it's just the mental part of getting ready in the summer and getting ready for a long year."

Pandian wrote that his words seem to hint that he'd stay with the Wizards for one more season. And why not? They had been successful with the veteran small forward around, and if not for an untimely hand injury suffered by John Wall, they could be facing the Golden State Warriors in the Finals right now.

But according to Bleacher Report's Sam Spiegelman, Pierce is more likely headed to the Los Angeles Clippers next season to reunite with his former championship mentor Doc Rivers. Pierce still has one year on his deal with Washington, but he could opt out this July and come home to L.A.

The only issue about that Los Angeles option is money. The Clippers are set to offer impending free agent DeAndre Jordan a max contract this summer. And with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin already enjoying their own max deals, it is highly probable that Pierce would join the Clips on a budget.

Meanwhile, Sports World Report's Lauren Moranor wrote that the 37-year old Pierce is seriously considering retirement as the best move for him right now. Even if the mind is willing, but if the body is already fragile, then he may choose to listen to his body.

So far, The Truth is still undecided. The fans would just have to wait and see this summer if Father Time will add another NBA superstar on his list.
