California Zoo Animals Enjoy a 13,000-Pound Fruit Feast

Oakland Zoo

Animals at a Bay Area zoo in California were treated to a special meal on Thursday when they got to feast on a 13,000 pound donation of fruit.

According to reports, a delivery truck carrying exotic fruit crashed and spilled its contents across the highway. Officials estimate that the produce was worth around $50,000.

The truck was traveling from Mexico to make a delivery in Oakland when it crashed into another vehicle, sending the various exotic fruits tumbling onto the throughway. Although no one was injured, 50,000 pounds of the fruit did manage to block traffic for several hours.

Luckily, the fruit was packed in thick cardboard shipping crates, leaving the majority of it in excellent condition.

13,000 pounds of Thai bananas, plantains, and prickly jackfruits were sent to the animals at the Oakland Zoo and another 37,000 pounds were given as a donation to Alameda County Food Bank in Oakland.

Nicky Mora, a spokeswoman for the zoo, stated that initially some of the animals were hesitant and reluctant to dig in. Mora explained that fruits like the jackfruit, which would have sold for around $35 apiece in California stores, are more "unusual" than what the animals are accustomed to.

While many of the zoo's bears rushed to dive into the sumptuous feast, an elephant named Osh seemed reluctant to give it a try. However, eventually all the bears, giraffes, and elephants dove into the fruit buffet to eat their full.

Zoological manager Darren Minier assured news sources that the animals would not be fed any damaged fruit. Only fruit without major bruising, broken skin, and insects would be part of the happy animals' fruity feast.

Zoo officials also stated that the animals may have a few more days to enjoy the exotic fare as the donation was so large zoo keepers were forced to freeze leftovers.
