It was predicted to be a one-sided contest and it was. Serena Williams defeated first-time finalist Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain to claim her sixth Wimbledon title and overall 21st grand slam. The American dominated Centre Court with 29 winners and 12 aces to claim the 6-4 6-4 victory in just an hour and 23 minutes.

The Spaniard had an early break in the first game of the match and took the lead at 4-2 but unforced errors in the seventh game gave the break back to the World no. 1 who went on to take the first set. Williams dominated the second set and was up 5-1 when Muguruza found her groove and broke the American twice to take the match to 5-4. Inexperience shone through, however, as the young gun went down 0-40 on her serve and hit a forehand wide to give Williams the Championships.

"There was definitely pressure towards the end," Williams told BBC. "Garbine started playing really well and I just had to think to stay out there and work really hard. I am having so much fun out on the court. Everyday is a pleasure to be playing and winning Wimbledon."

Williams' win drew praises from prominent figures such as Hillary Clinton who tweeted, "@serenawilliams proves yet again: anything is possible when you work hard, dream big, and never stop reaching. #Wimbledon", and author J.K. Rowling who congratulated the Champion by tweeting, "#SerenaSlam! I love her. What an athlete, what a role model, what a woman!" Singer John Legend and TV personality Kris Jenner are also among the celebrities who celebrated Williams' victory by posting Twitter shout-outs to the tennis star.

Next up for the American is the summer hardcourt season and all eyes are on her as she attempts to win the last grand slam of the year, the US Open. Winning it would mean achieving the Golden Grand Slam feat and tying Steffi Graf's record of Grand Slam singles titles.

"It's really, really huge. But I haven't done it," said Williams when asked about the possibility of winning all four slams in one year. "Of course I'm going to try to do the best I can, but I don't have the Grand Slam in my hands. I can't really feel that if it's not there. Hopefully I'll do well at the Open and then I can answer that question."
