The agreement between Williams, who grew up in a Dallas suburb according to the league's official website, and the Mavs is set to be formalized after the 31-year-old former Team USA point guard finished clearing waivers that came with the buyout.

There were rumors since last week that the 10-year vet was urging Nets general manager Billy King for a release so he could at last join Mark Cuban's team. In 2012, the 6-foot-3 playmaker almost landed with the 2011 champions, but Dallas was outbid by the Nets which made him stay with the franchise as the team also changed its geographic name into Brooklyn following a move from New Jersey.

"I don't want to say Deron wanted to go," King told media on Saturday prior to his team's summer league match against Cleveland. "I think it was just time. We both tried to make it work. We had some great moments with him."

Those moments were few and far away, though.

Williams' numbers and performance had been on a decline since then, going from 21 ppg and 8.7 apg during the final season the Nets represented New Jersey in 2011-2012 to 13 ppg and 6.6 apg last season.

The Washington Post said that the main reasons for this huge drop in form were chronic injuries, a "sour attitude", and his incapacity to handle the pressure of playing for a big market NBA team.

About five years ago, William was considered as one of the top two or three best point guards in the league and was expected to play for a championship when he was traded to New Jersey from Utah. His impact on the Nets was immediately felt, but the team advanced to the playoffs only three times during his five-year stint. They only got past the first round once in 2014 before getting eliminated by the Miami Heat in the second round.

Reports said that Brooklyn bought out the outstanding $43 million in the former Illinois Fighting Illini's five-year deal for $27.5 million, which will be paid for the next five seasons. That recompense would be on top of his current deal with the Mavs that is reportedly worth $10 million for two years.
