Seattle Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson is still holding out in signing the $21 million per year contract extension offer by the team as he allegedly wants more, as reported by CBS Sports.

The two-time Pro Bowler is in the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to earn him $1.54 million this coming season. $21 million is a long way off from that one, but there were speculations that Wilson aims to become the highest-paid player in the NFL right now, the title that Green Bay Packers' quarterback Aaron Rodgers currently holds at $22 million.

The second and third highest paid NFL players are also both signal callers, namely Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger ($21.85 million) and Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton ($20.8 million), as per the league's official website.

The deadline for signing contract extensions will be at the end of July before the start of training camps, and after that all negotiations can be done next year at the end of the coming season. This means that if Russell will not put his signature on the $21 million dotted line before August, he will be throwing away $19.46 million to play for the Seahawks this 2015 season.

Seattle Times' Bob Condotta indicated that the main thing that was hindering Wilson to sign was the issue of guaranteed money, in which the former Wisconsin standout was said to be getting less than his contemporaries except in case of injuries.

Condotta mentioned that Wilson was reportedly not offered fully guaranteed cash that were as big as, say, what Newton received early this year. The Panther QB collected $30 million guaranteed immediately after signing. Newton will then reportedly receive a further $23 million by the third day of the 2016 season, which includes $10 million in bonuses and his base salary of $13 million.

It seems clear that the two-time NFC champ and Super Bowl XLVIII winner is not keen on accepting anything less than that of Newton. While the $21 million overall salary for Wilson is slightly bigger than that of Newton's, the issue is said to be the guaranteed money stipulated in the agreement.

As of the moment, both Wilson's camp and the Seahawks are on a standstill with regards to the playmaker's contract and they have less than a week to figure things out.
