Microsoft has rebuilt and recreated its original website from 1994 to celebrate its 20th anniversary on the internet.

The 1994 homepage certainly looks out of date and nostalgic. It now serves as a portal for Microsoft that leads browsers to Microsoft's current website.

Most pages link to the website's news and career opportunities.

Web design firm Paravel that produced the rebuild of the site admitted facing technical challenges in reconstituting the website.

Developers compared the recreation of the site to look like the first one to an "archaeological dig."

Mark Ingalls, a Microsoft engineer and the website's first administrator, recalls how he was the only website employee at the time other than his boss.

Since HTML was relatively unknown territory in those days, information was published on the site using 3-1/2 inch floppy disks.

Ingalls compared his website administrating duties to running a newspaper where they published content twice a day.

One of the reasons Microsoft started a website in 1994 was to place its growing Knowledge Base online since the company managed support groups and forums for customers.

The first website also ran on CompuServe, a precursor to early internet dial-up server providers.

Microsoft.com was also one of the first corporate websites to implement a responsive design that could be browsed using any device.

Paravel adapted to the technology back in 1994 where browsers do not support images, said Dave Rupert, one of the developers from Paravel.

Back then, having a website online was already milestone whether it had an image or not.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to access the 1994 internet via Microsoft's website.
