The highly anticipated adaptation of  Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" has been confirmed. It was said that the author wanted Tom Hiddleston to join the cast as Morpheus.

According to Youth Health Mag, the best selling author originally wanted Benedict Cumberbatch to play the role of Morpheus. When Gaiman saw him play Sherlock Homes, the author thought that he would be an incredible Morpheus. However, given that the actor is busy shooting "Doctor Strange," they have decided to audition other actors for the part.

The publication also claimed that the film director Joseph Gordon-Levitt has also shown interest in playing the character of Morpheus. This, however, has yet to be confirmed.

In an interview with Radio Times, Gaiman revealed that he also thought Johnny Depp, in his early years, would be perfect to play the role of Morpheus. However, since the movie adaptation came in later than he wanted, he felt that Depp would be "too old" for the role.

Meanwhile, in a recent Reddit AMA, Gordon-Levitt defended Gaiman's decision to sign a film adaptation for "Sandman" rather than a TV series. He said that although some of the shows nowadays have paid attention to their visuals, it is still incomparable to what movies with a big budget could do.

When asked if the movie will closely follow the comic series, Gordon-Levitt admitted that they have thought about changing a few details.

"We are using a whole bunch of specifics straight from the comics, but of course, we're also having to do a certain amount of invention, and in between that, there's tons of re-appropriating, re-contextualizing, combining, consolidating, and all manner of things that literalists might not like," he explained.

The director, however, assured fans that the central plotline would remain the same. Gordon-Levitt also encouraged fans to be more patient, adding that the adaptation is definitely worth the wait.
