Disney and Lucasfilms surprised fans today as they released a new trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" via their official Instagram account. The short clip features an army of Stormtroopers along with a glimpse of a beginning fight scene between Finn and Kylo Ren.

John Boyega plays the role of Finn who is shown with a lightsaber for the first time. Adam Driver plays the role Kylo Ren who holds the crossblade lightsaber in the clip. BB-8 and Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, are also shown in the 15-second clip. Many are speculating that Rey could be Leia and Han's daughter.

The footage captioned "There has been an awakening..." was released exclusively through Instagram to announce that the app can now support widescreen videos. The company said in an official statement, "Instagram is especially excited about what these new format options will mean for video and this @starwars reveal is an awesome example."

Fans will also get a taste of the movie's riveting soundtrack as you can sense danger from the first few seconds of the clip followed by an ominous voiceover saying, "There's been an awakening...have you felt it?"

The producers didn't release any new trailer at the San Diego Comic-Con but opted for a behind-the-scenes clip instead. They also didn't show anything during Disney's D23. So this surprise trailer, no matter how short, is a treat for "Star Wars" fans.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18 and will monopolize all Imax theaters on its first month of screening.
