The Jacksonville Jaguars are going to begin the new season without their recently acquired starting tight end Julius Thomas as he is set to undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn tendon in his left finger.

Jacksonville signed Thomas in March of this year to a five-year, $46 million contract after he was released by the Denver Broncos following a five-year stint at the Sports Authority Field at Mile High since his rookie season.

Bleacher Report indicated that the recovery timeline of Thomas' surgery would be about four to five weeks or a month, something that both Thomas and the team were not expecting him to start his Jaguars stint.

The 27-year-old former Portland State standout, who missed the Jaguars' last two preseason games because of the lingering hand discomfort, initially wanted to play through the pain but the team's general manager, David Caldwell, insisted that the injury should be fixed as soon as possible so he can get back healthy and at a hundred percent by their Week 4 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

"He could probably play with it, but if we let it go and it's still loose, then we're at Week 4 or 5 in the season and he needs surgery," said Caldwell. "Our most realistic case is he has surgery and he's back for Indy."

NBC Sports' Pro Basketball Talk reported that Thomas wants to get a second opinion regarding his damaged finger before going under the knife, but it is more likely that it will be operated anyway.

Thomas broke a bone in his left hand during their 23-21 Preseason Week 1 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as per the league's official website. He was being fitted with a cast the following morning when doctors found the torn tendon in one of his fingers and immediately recommended surgery to mend it.

The two-time Pro-Bowler was one of Jaguars sophomore starting quarterback Blake Bortles' favorite receivers during training camp and he is expected to be missed during the first few weeks of the regular season.

Clay Harbor will reportedly fill-in the starting role for the moment with wideouts Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson, and Allen Hurns as Bortles' other receiving options till his favorite pass catcher comes back.
