New York Jets starting tight end Jace Amaro is reportedly out for the 2015 NFL season as he was diagnosed with a torn shoulder labrum that would need surgery to repair. The team placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, making his one-year absence from the field official.

CBS Sports said that Amaro first hurt his shoulder during the Jets' 23-3 Week 1 Preseason loss to the Detroit Lions, which the 23-year-old said was only a sprain and nothing serious. The former Texas Tech standout even joined the team in their next two games and said that it was "getting better every day."

However, team doctors recently discovered that Amaro actually tore his shoulder labrum and that it would require surgery in order to completely heal.

Head coach Todd Bowles reportedly expected the setback as soon as he saw Amaro landed awkwardly on his shoulder against the Lions on August 13.

"We gave him time to get better," the coach said, as per the New York Times, "and he didn't get better."

The NFL's official website noted that without Amaro, the Jets are left without a true pass-catching TE in their roster. Their other starting option, Zach Sudfeld, also suffered a season-ending injury, a torn ACL, during the recent training camp.

New York will surely miss the explosiveness and on-field IQ of Amaro and will be left with veterans Jeff Cumberland and Kellen Davis alternating at the starting TE spot this coming season.

Another option for tight end that Bowles is said to be considering is their 23-year-old reserve wideout Quincy Enunwa. The second-year player has not seen significant playing time on the field during last season as he was buried deep under the Jets' wide receivers pecking order, but the coach is reportedly putting him with the TE's this time.

Amaro was the Jets' second round pick, 49th overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft. He had an inconsistent rookie season but have shown enough highlights to be considered as a starter this year.

His best game so far was during Week 6 last season against the Denver Broncos when he caught 10 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, on his way to a 345-yard, two touchdown rookie year.
