Four-division world champion and boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. (62-8, 45 KOs) backed out from a September 12 bout with Tony Moran (15-6, 5 KOs) for undisclosed reasons barely a week before the said fight.

Boxing Scene indicated that according to VB Promotions, Moran's promoter and the organizers of the Liverpool, Merseyside match, the 46-year-old boxer had recently "secured a world title shot" in Russia. It was said to be the reason why Jones withdrew and missed his scheduled flight for England last week.

The former WBA heavyweight titlist was set to fight the 42-year-old Briton at the Aintree Equestrian Centre this Saturday in a 10-round match for the MBC International and WBFed International crowns.

While Jones' fight was cancelled, the event will reportedly go on this time at the Liverpool Olympia on the same schedule with Moran still featured in the undercard against a still unannounced opponent.

The card's main event is now a WBFed Intercontinental super bantamweight championship match between champion Paul Economides and challenger Prosper Ankrah.

"I'm extremely disappointed and saddened by the whole thing," VB Promotions chief Stephen Vaughan. "We had invested a lot of money and time into this event, as we wanted to make it a great occasion for the fans and the game alike. But sadly, it wasn't to be and legal advice is to be sought surrounding the circumstances in which it has happened."

The event's name was changed from "RJJ Legend" into "The Show Must Go On".

Bleacher Report noted that after Krzysztof Głowacki won the WBO cruiserweight title over Marco Huck last month, Jones had been expressing his desire to challenge the Polish fighter for the belt.

Jones reportedly said that he wants the title from Głowacki as soon as possible, although there are no official announcements yet that it would really be his next fight.

ESPN's Dan Rafael said that Jones had long been interested in Huck's former cruiserweight title and had planned to fight more frequently to soon have a shot at it.

This was speculated to be the world title shot that Vaughan was talking about that allegedly caused Jones' withdrawal from the Liverpool event.
