The Buffalo Bills re-signed veteran quarterback Matt Cassel only days after they released him and then appointed him as the no.1 backup for starting signal caller Tyrod Taylor over resident playmaker EJ Manuel.

Rookie tight end Nick O'Leary was waived from the final 53-man roster to accommodate Cassel back, as per SB Nation's Brian Galliford.

Galliford also noted that the Bills may have really "wanted to keep him around", but only at a "reduced cost". The 33-year-old Pro Bowler was initially set to receive a $4 million salary this year and perhaps it was simply lowered in favor of the team.

The Houston Texans reportedly made an offer to Cassel, but his reconstructed deal with Buffalo is still higher because of bonus inclusions so the former Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback ended up choosing the latter.

After Cassel's return, head coach Rex Ryan immediately cleared the team's QB depth by announcing that the 10-year pro would be the main backup behind Taylor, demoting Manuel as the third-stringer.

The decision was a surprise even for some football analysts as a few were actually expecting Manuel to be the team's starter this season.

Meanwhile, ESPN indicated that Manuel is not looking to be traded despite the relegation.

"I'm good where I'm at right now with the Bills," the 25-year-old former Florida State standout told reporters after he was asked if it would benefit him to be somewhere else. "I'm not sure. For right now, I'm in my current place. I'm still here with the Bills. I want to be a part of this team and I want to help us win."

Manuel has known no other NFL team besides the Bills since they drafted him 16th overall in 2013. He showed a lot of promise in his first two years, even starting a total of 14 games for Ryan since his rookie season.

"I think it is still important to continue to battle," he said, as reported by the Syracuse Media Group. "I did what I was supposed to do, and that was have a good preseason and play well in the games. This is just what it is."

Buffalo quarterback coach David Lee was reportedly enthusiastic about having all three back in the fold. Taylor is said to be the starter, Cassel the veteran leader while Manuel is the up and coming young star.
