"Akira" is a classic manga that was turned into an animated film in 1988. Warner Bros. has brought the film rights to the sci-fi epic.

Den of Geek reports that the studio plans to make "Akira" a trilogy instead of cramping it in one movie. Sources say that Nolan has met with a filmmaker previously involved in the film over the past three months to discuss the project.

The futuristic theme and dystopian setting of the popular manga is something within Nolan's league. There's no word if he will be a producer like his involvement in "Man of Steel" or a director similar to the "Dark Knight" trilogy.

There have been rumors about the remake of this manga over the years. At one point Keanu Reeves was speculated to be part of the cast. Then there was Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart who were reportedly part of the movie, too. Director Jaume Collet-Serra was also rumored to take full reigns of the film.

The "Akira" trilogy currently being conceptualized will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way. Meanwhile, Marco J. Ramirez of "Sons of Anarchy" is writing the script for the film.

Nolan's next big movie will be out on July 2017 and there's a possibility that it could be "Akira." His ties with Warner and DiCaprio from "Inception" give higher chances that this epic trilogy will finally hit the big screen under the genius that is Nolan.
