NBA Rumors: Gerald Green Returns to Play for Heat in Lesser Role

Suspended wingman Gerald Green returned to the Miami Heat lineup on Tuesday in the team's 103-91 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, and his lessened role even off the bench was quite noticeable.

Green played less than 12 minutes that night, contributing just two points, four rebounds, one assist, and three personal fouls - an obvious decline to the 21.7 minutes and 10.3 points per game average he registered in his first three games of the season before his six-game absence.

ESPN reported that the 29-year-old, eight-year veteran was remorseful about the recent bizarre incident in his Miami condo that landed him in a hospital and prompted the team to suspend him for two games.

Green has sort to put that episode behind him claiming he is a changed man, but it seems that the consequences of his actions are just starting.

Before the fiasco, Green was Erik Spoelstra's designated first offensive option off the bench. Although it is still too early to tell whether the head coach does not view him that way anymore, in his first game Spoelstra did not show that much confidence in him.

"All we've told him right now is just bring that same approach (great energy and attitude), work to get better, and get back into game shape and then we'll go from there," said the 45-year-old two-time champion coach said about Green, according to Miami Herald. "So he understands. The game will dictate how he'll be worked back in."

Young players Justise Winslow and Tyler Johnson have been effectively playing in Green's place and this reportedly pleases Spoelstra at this moment.

With Green out of the rotation, the rookie and sophomore were up, allowing them to develop and contribute more for the squad.

Asked about his feelings seeing his young teammates getting more minutes, Green said "those guys have been playing well and it's enjoyable to watch them be successful. I'm just ready for whatever role I have."

It's good to see Green's maturity regarding his current situation with Spoelstra and the Heat. Although it sure is unfortunate if he would find out later that he has missed the chance of being more instrumental in the team because of one silly incident.
