Stephen Colbert of the "Late Show" is proud to be a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic fantasy series of the Lord of the Rings books. However, during a recent episode, he was rather upset when he heard about scientists in Brazil who discovered a new species of daddy long legs spider and officially named it Landumoema smeagol.

"Smeagol" is a character from the "Lord of the Rings" that is chosen to be the name of this cave dwelling arachnid.

Colbert claims that the scientists got their Lord of the Rings characters mixed up as Colbert would only gleefully explain in extreme detail how Smeagol is not a cave dwelling creature that wants to be hidden away from the sun, in which the scientists proudly named their new discovery after.

Smeagol is a friendly and cheery Hobbit who was then corrupted by the One Ring, transforming him into a morbid creature called Gollum, who likes to be hidden away in caves and dark places.

During Friday night's episode of "The Late Show", Colbert explained how the scientists should have named the new Brazilian spider Gollum and not Smeagol, giving another hilarious analogy of naming a venomous snake as Darth Vader and not Anakin.

The scientists published this new study in the journal, ZooKeys, where they said that they are apparently aware of the Tolkien lore about Middle Earth and the distinct difference between Smeagol and Gollum.

In the study, the scientists explain how the specific epithet is referring to the hobbit named Smeagol which is created by J.R.R. Tolkien, that is the original name of Gollum, the dweller of caves below the Misty Mountains of Middle Earth, in the Lord of the Rings book.

This might explain the origin of the character Smeagol, however, the scientists did not offer an explanation why they named the blind harvestman spider after Smeagol.
