Google engineers have created a unique prototype of a wearable device. The design of the wearable device draws inspiration from "Star Trek." The device is aimed at testing the possibility of a real-life communicator than can tap into the massive data banks of Google search.

The device is about the size of a casino chip, only slightly thicker. Its operation was demonstrated to Time by Google senior vice president Amit Singhal. Just like in "Star Trek," Singhal wore the device as a lapel on his chest.

The device can be activated with a light tap. The prototype of the device can output sound through an onboard speaker. It can also be connected to a pair of headphones.

The main idea behind the project is to create a device that will make it easier for people to query a search into Google without grabbing their smartphones.

Singhal told Time, "I always wanted that pin. You just ask it anything and it works. That's why we were like, 'Let's go prototype that and see how it feels.'"

The device is still in its early testing phase. However, it shows just how much dedication Google is pouring into its search platform. With the introduction of the new prototype, Google is seemingly looking to make voice search a major part of its service.

According to CNet, Google is known for its penchant towards futuristic ideas on how to create and develop new technologies. The company is currently working on autonomous cars and Wi-Fi balloons. In the aspect of smart wearable devices, the company has experimented with the Google Glass headsets.

In the smartwatch industry, Google's Android Wear operating system is at the heart of smartwatches from companies like Motorola, LG and the most recent to join the foray TAG Heuer.
